This white paper addresses key points in NHSN’s C. difficile LabID reporting module, with a specific focus on the correlation between lab testing method and Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR).
While switching lab testing methods will not independently improve a facility’s SIR, limiting testing to only appropriate patient specimens and using a highly sensitive test can help:
• Minimize the likelihood that labs will over-report CDI LabID events (i.e., report colonization as infection)
• Minimize the number of true-positive cases that are missed due to less sensitive test methods
• Maximize the likelihood that the appropriate patients are identified, isolated, and treated (if required) to avoid transmission within the facility
