Multidrug-resistant microbes (MDROs) are on the rise, infecting millions globally. Innovative strategies are needed to strengthen best practices and antibiotic stewardship programs for a comprehensive infection control program. With more and more studies highlighting the role of soft surfaces and the environment in the spread of infection, one strategy to combat MDROs and other pathogens is through soft surface intervention. EPA registered SilvaClean, an innovative ionic silver technology, allows soft surfaces to actively participate in infection control through a residual antimicrobial effect. Multi-year and multi-site clinical studies demonstrate that the ionic silver technology reduces bioburden throughout an entire facility and lowers HAI rates when added into infection prevention strategies. The commentary is informational for infection preventionists as a means to look at innovative strategies, including soft surface intervention, to combat MDROs and other harmful microbes.
